Again the Americans have outdone themselves on the extreme. Although the video below is extremely funny, it has come about from a serious problem that is threatening the eco system of lakes and rivers in the US.

First introduced to the United states as a food, Asian carp have escaped into the waterways, threatening the the native population of fish. It has been reported that they consume nearly half their weight in plankton each day, depriving huge amounts of nutrition needed for the start of the food chain. There is a serious concern that these fish will find their ways into the great lakes through canals and waterways decimating the population of native fish.

The problem is so serious that installations of electric fences and gates are being set up with low electric charge to turn back the fish. They have even poisoned sections of canals and locks to stop the spread of these fish.

As a keen angler and proud dad, obviously I wanted the children to get involved with my passion for coarse fishing.

I have started them off with carp fishing, in what I consider to be South Wales’s, if not Wales best place to get the children interested in fishing, and that is ‘Seven Oaks Fishery’.

After spending quite some time at the lakes, you tend to pick up a few tips and tricks relating to the types of fish you intend to catch. For me, I wanted the children to catch some good size fish, that would put up a bit of a fight, so carp was the obvious choice.

For us we tend to go early in the morning, or early evening, a few hours before sunset, to catch the carp feeding off the top. Some might say that this isn’t fishing, but you try telling that to a 7 year old reeling in a dozen 7lb carp in the space of a few hours. They are literally hooked at the moment. They have taken an intense interest in coarse fishing, having caught common and mirror carp, bream, rudd and roach. They can normally identify the fish before it registers with me.

We tend to use dog biscuits with bait bands on a size 12 or 14 barbless hook. We sometime use bread, but find we get a lot of success if you toast it first. It stays on the hook that little bit longer and you can push your hook between the toasted sides. The carp can have a few go’s at your toast and it stays pretty robust.

I would definitely recommend this type of fishing to start the children off with coarse fishing.

I would like to thank June and Terry for their hospitality, and hope there is a way they can post this letter on their website so that I may share my little knowledge but huge enjoyment with their fantastic setup.

AROUND £30,000 worth of prized koi carp fish have been stolen during a two-month crime spree.

Police are now advising owners to microchip their prized pets and secure their gardens.

Pc Dick Collins, crime prevention officer for the Vale of Glamorgan, said there had been eight thefts from ponds in gardens in the Rhoose and Boverton areas.

He said officers initially believed a heron was the culprit, until one owner reported his pond had been drained and the koi carp stolen, along with the water pump.

Pc Collins said 150 koi carp were stolen from one location.

He believes profit is the motive behind the thefts as individual fish can be worth as much as £2,000.

Owners are advised to take photographs of their fish as each has individual markings and to consider having them microchipped in a bid to beat the crooks.

Pc Collins said: “These fish can be very expensive, but they are also pets and losing them can be a traumatic event.

“Security lighting, secure fencing, gravel on paths, and prickly plants are all measures home owners can take to protect their property.

“Technology today means that you can now microchip your fish in the same way that you can have your cat and dog chipped.”

For more information, contact Pc Dick Collins at Barry Police Station on 01446 731627.

n Two men have been arrested in connection with the incidents and released on police bail pending further inquiries.
